If there's one must have book that's intended for anyone curious about Buddhist way of mindfulness, than this is the one.
It's a great synthesis on how the conscious mind works. You're presented with a clear, 10-stage plan, all that you need is a persistence to follow the map. Book slowly guides you from the very basics (what, why, how) and then introduces a way to battle the challenges you'll most likely encounter and a way to deal with them.
To be clear, the book doesn't include religious practices. It's a manual, densely packed of what not and what to-do. It's recommended for anyone that has some experience in meditation. The goals that should be accomplished are clearly laid out and, as you progress through the levels, you'll develop more and more sophisticated model of mind consciousness.
This book is written so that it's read, then re-read, then read again. Practice makes perfect, and this book certainly puts an emphasis on that. Make the best out of your meditation time.
